Chris Price and myself (Eric Wickland) completed the Backbone Trail in 12:47. Jay Smithburger aka Ringo ran roughly 50 miles with us but pulled the plug due to stomach issues. The direction was La Jolla to Will Rogers with a passage through Split Rock and a summit of Sandstone Peak. Props to Jayme Burtis, the ninja photographer, for crewing us all day and taking 1000 pictures! Also a special thanks to Howard Cohen and Keith Yanov for infusing us with fresh energy midday and running a couple sections with us. Weather was ideal - lows in the mid 40s, highs in the mid 60s. We were blessed by a rare lunar eclipse to start our journey off on the right foot. Details posted at connect.garmin.com/activity/133808781#.Tuf40WfQQ0g.mailto

Just to let folk know that, assuming I feel OK and the weather forecast remains about the same, I intend to run the BBT this Saturday 25th March - aiming for a 6.30am start running East to West and hoping for a fairly fast time. Lynn has kindly offered to crew for me all day (huge kudos and thanks!) but, right now, I will be running solo. If anyone is potentially interested in joining - especially from Yerba Buena road through to the finish I would love the company. Cell is 805 259 8960 Having run the whole route over 2 days a couple of weeks ago I think I know where I am going and, optimistically, I will use the current 12hrs 47 mins as my target. I will post back here to let folk know how it goes

I am pleased to report that my run yesterday (Saturday March 24th) went well and I completed the Backbone Trail from East to West in 12 hours and 09 minutes. (We had 12:08 on watches but the timestamped camera used at start and finish shows 07:15 to 19:24 so I am claiming 12:09). This run was solo but expertly crewed by my wife Lynn (much thanks and kudos). Conditions were close to ideal - all run in daylight and with early cloud. It cleared and I got hot toiling up the long pull from Piuma but, really, it was a cool day for this area and this time of year. Split times - out of each support point are: Start - 07:15 Dead Horse - 09:06 Stunt and Schueren - 10:06 Las Virgenes/Piuma - 11:22 Corral Canyon - 12:26 Kanan Road - 13:38 Mulholland Drive - 14:50 Yerba Buena/Mishe Mokwa - 16.21 Danielson Ranch (no support) - 17:55 Finish - 19:24 I had run all of the trail 3 weeks earlier as part of a group expertly guided by Howard Cohen. On the day I reached 3 intersections where I was not sure of the direction and in each case Howards notes provided the answer. Thus I lost a maximum of 4-5 minutes on navigation hesitation. A fuller account of the day will be posted later today to my blog at: www.markhartell.blogspot.comHuge thanks to Lynn for world class crewing, Howard for the recce run and route notes, Poolside and Pete Tong for some great sounds when the legs were hurting and all those who responded to Lynns posts during the day.

I (Vitalis Maximus) believe I am the second person to post a time for the Backbone Trail "Double-Crossing" my time was 41:33.09. I started at Will Rodgers went to Ray Miller and came back to Will Rodgers. My first crossing was unsupported, meaning i did not rely on water caches or support until Ray Miller. On my return trip I received aid at Kanan Dume.

Headed to La Jolla Canyon to run to Will Rogers today with a couple friends. Not really an FKT attempt as I think that was set at the Coyote Cohorts race in 2013 in about 13 hours or so. But who knows!

Three of us finished BBT yesterday from Ray Miller to Will Rogers. Me in 16:46, with one friend just ahead and one just behind!

2/14/2017 Started at Ray Miller with Matthew Robinson (thanks for the lift!) and finished at Will Rogers alone. Matt had only planned to stay for the first ten miles which he did, thanks for the early company. Completed the entire trail fully self-supported in 16:22. Strava photo's are attached to verify. The main photo shows moving time which was 14:49.10? I felt like I never stopped?? Hah. Figured Strava would log the actual time once saved but it didn't. However, it was 16:22, which was when I hit the pavement in the parking lot at Will Rogers. Can cross reference the attachments to confirm. Weather was fantastic and the trail is just stunning right now! Massive kudo's to all that have worked on this trail. It is in such fine shape with awesome signage. I had done only about 20 miles of it prior to this crossing and had no problem finding my way. Thank you everybody! Can anyone verify if this is indeed the FKT for Self-supported?? -Zac

Zac, nice running out there. I think this is a self supported record for the true Backbone.. Understand that the route has changed over the years and record keeping is limited... Now who gets to beat this record.?

It appears I took a bit of a shortcut in the last half mile or so of the BBT Unsupported FKT attempt. While myself and my mom still consider this to be the FKT, the TRUE BBT Unsupported FKT is still out there for us honest, ultra-critical, runners of merit. Below is a photo illustrating what the true BBT is. Yellow is the true route which unbeknownst to me follows the access road not the single track (blue and red) to the parking lot. So, if you go east bound, do not miss this at the end of your run!!! Howard, thanks for seeking out clarification, and for all of the work you have done for the running community. Being new to LA, this trail has been a blessing, cheers! Howard, I hope I got this write-up correct. If I am still off on the true direction of the trail please let me know.
