I completed the new distance, 296 mile Superior Hiking Trail, in 12 days 4 hours and 19 minutes. This took place from June 24 to July 6, 2013. I am not certain, but may be a record for the new trail distance. I started at the southern terminus at Jay Cooke State Park, and finished at the "270 Overlook" into Canada. I had 3 resupplies: Two Harbors, Finland, and Grand Marais. I stayed at a friend's house in Duluth on my 2nd night. She brought me from the trail to her house, and back to the trail in the morning. I hitchhiked into Two Harbors, and amazingly met someone at the post office who maintains the trail. He offered a ride back to the trail. In Finland I walked both ways to get my resupply. I tried to hitchhike, but no luck. And in Grand Marais I hitchhiked into town, stayed at a friend's house that night, got my resupply in the morning and he brought me back to the trail. So I am not sure if this would be considered supported or self supported. I assumed self supported at first, but this is my first time on this site and after doing some reading realized that my hike may be considered supported by some. It was largely self supported with resupplies sent via a bounce box. Here are photos as well as some commentary: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10100236310523949.1073741831.33804725&type=1&l=d90af1d59dAttachments:

Hey Folks,
My wife, Shawn Severson and myself will be heading up to go for a blitz of the trail. We'll be heading north to south, starting at the 270 Overlook and ending at Jay Cooke SP. We haven't decided if this will end up being "self-supported" or "unsupported", we'll see how that plays out, but we'll be heading from the start carrying everything we need with no drops or resupplies on the way down. Never know if we might break down and hit a store or town on the way for something. We're getting dropped off up at Otter Lake Rd on August 18th and will be heading out first thing on the 19th hoping to get down to Jay Cooke by the 24th.
We've opted not to carry a Spot, but we're hoping pictures along the way, occasional Facebook posts and possibly some GPS data from my Garmin along the way ought to be enough to verify where we've been and when.
If there's anything I left out or if anyone will be in the area and wants to wave as we head past let us know!

On the Superior Shuttle: Hitchhiking is much cheaper and easier if you are solo or in a small group. I have done it numerous times. If not, drive two cars. SHT shuttle is a nice service to have as a backup but I also had a similar experience with a crabby driver, and it is expensive. They even charge for your dog.
Good luck to all those who attempt to break trail records! For me, I think a 20-30 mile day is a pretty good accomplishment.

Tim Lupfer and I (Jared VanderHook) will be attempting to set what we believe will be an FKT for the 296 mile distance. We will begin at the northern end of the trail (270 degree overlook) on May 23, and we plan to finish on May 31 at Jay Cooke State Park. This will be a self-supported effort, and we plan to resupply using Post Offices and caches that we will be dropping for ourselves along the trail. We also plan to eat at a few restaurants along the way. We will be carrying a SPOT, but also plan to take pictures and keep a daily journal of our progress. You can track us on our SPOT page - sht.moremilesmorefun.com/ We also made a Facebook page for our attempt that we will try to post updates to along the way - www.facebook.com/jaredtimsht

Tim Lupfer and I (Jared VanderHook) completed our self-supported through-hike last night with a total time of 8 days 14 hours 44 minutes setting a new FKT for the 296 mile distance. We used the 7th Edition Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail to plan the trip. We began at the Northernmost point of the trail, the "270 Overlook" and finished at the Jay Cooke State Park Visitor Center. We had 7 resupply points along the way. 4 resupply caches on the trail using bear bins or hanging dry bags (Grand Marais, Schroeder, Lake County 301 and Martin Road). 2 Post Offices (Finland and Silver Bay). 1 business held our box for us, Eagle Ridge Resort at Lutsen Mountain. In addition to miles covered on the main trail we hiked into several towns for meals and/or to purchase supplies as needed (Grand Marais, Lutsen, Schroeder, Finland, and Silver Bay). In Silver Bay we hitch-hiked part of the way back to the trailhead. In Lutsen we hitch-hiked to/from the Cascade Restaurant. In all cases we rejoined the trail at the same point we left it. Here are the daily mile splits: May 23: 42.5 miles. Started at 6:44am. Finished at Kimball Creek Campsite at 10:30pm. May 24: 26.25 miles. Started at 6:20am. Finished at Cut Log Camp at 7:30pm. Resupply on trail via hanging dry bag (+3.2 mile round trip into Grand Marais for meal). May 25: 33.2 miles. Started at 6:30am. Finished at Carlton Peak at 9:15pm. Resupply box held at Eagle Ridge Resort (+1.8 mile round trip into Lutsen Mountain Resort area). May 26: 27.7 miles. Started at 6:16am. Finished at Crosby Manitou trailhead at 9:05pm. Resupply on spur trail via hanging dry bag (+4 mile round trip into Schroeder for meal). May 27: 30.8 miles. Started at 5:48am. Finished at Palisade East Camp at 10:45pm. Resupply at Finland Post Office and meal (+3.2 mile round trip into Finland). May 28: 38.25 miles. Started at 6:10am. *Finished at Gooseberry Falls camp at 11:48pm. Resupply at Silver Bay Post Office and meal (+3.2 mile round trip into Silver Bay). *NOTE: There was a closed 1.6 mile section of the trail between Blueberry Hill Road and Gooseberry State Park due to a private landowner revoking access. We followed the official detour down Blueberry Hill Road (1.2 miles) and along the Gitchi Gami State Trail parallel to Hwy 61 (2.1 miles) meeting back up with the SHT at Gooseberry State Park near the visitor center. (http://www.twoharborsmn.com/news/3735751-sht-detour-finalized) May 29: 39.5 miles. Started at 6:08am. Finished at Fox Farm Road Trailhead at 11:13pm. Resupply on trail via stashed bear bins near Lake County 301 trailhead. May 30: 34.2 miles. Started at 6:16am. Finished at Duluth Lakewalk at 8:20pm (stayed at Fitger's Hotel). Resupply on trail via stashed bear bins near Martin Road trailhead. May 31: 34.1 miles. Started at 7:40am. Finished at Jay Cooke State Park Visitor Center at 9:28pm. Hey Y'all - I'm heading out to attempt to set the unsupported FKT on the Superior Trail. The previous FKT (above) is the incomplete 205 mile trail. Talking with the folks at the SHTA, the trail is now 306 miles long. I am hoping to break the 4 days 3 hours on the 205 miles, and continue the FKT and move it forward to the 306 mile (current) trail. I have blogged about this at stevenjshattuck.wordpress.com. I am going to start either Thursday or Friday morning (depending on weather) from the northern Terminus and head South. Though I am an experienced hiker, I have never attempted an FKT. Hoping I don't fall flat on my face Here is a link to my spot: share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0qO0Xsi5zHECFXQAoVq7bLyqXUysx4GV1

Maybe you already know this, but there are three races (a 100 miler, 50 miler, and 26 miler) going northbound on the trail that you'll probably run into if you're doing 50 miles a day. They all finish on Saturday at the Lutsen ski resort, which I think is your mile 86. The 100 milers start at about 105 miles further south on the trail on Friday at 8am, so you should run into them somewhere. Could either be a good thing--yay for seeing other humans!--or a bad thing, if you want the trail to yourself.

Anyone know the fastest known time for a unsupported solo for completion of the full 306 distance? Did ^ he complete it? Also what is the youngest age?

My son Ryan Larsen and myself (Art Larsen) are going to attempt to break the through hike record for the 310 mile distance starting this Friday morning (7/1/2016.)
This will be an unsupported hike from the 270 Overlook to the current terminus at Wild Valley Road. As I haven’t been able to access many of the SPOT pages I’ve seen others use, we won’t be investing in that particular device, but will take time stamped pictures at every camp sign we come to, as well as corresponding pedometer readings.
The plan is to finish at Wild Valley Road by 11:59 pm on July 8th. We will make a daily journal of our progress, and if successful will post the results here.

I, Mike Ward, am starting on an unsupported thru-hike on the Superior Hiking Trail on September 1, 2016. My goal is speed, to finish on the 9th day, averaging about 35 miles per day. I will hike from 270 Degree Overlook south to the Wisconsin Border. I've been formulating this idea for nearly 3 years, and spent the last year truly training for a speed hike.
