On September 22, 2011 myself Brad Mailloux and Kevin Gagne will attempt to run the Highlands Backpacking Trail in Algonquin Provincial Park Ontario Canada the trail is 35km long. We have not been able to find any records of the fastest completion, when contacting the park and the friends of Algonquin organization we are warned not to run it and the fastest we could expect to complete it would be two days with one overnight. We hope to be done in 6 hours. We will take pictures with my cell phone at the start, finish and during hopefully at marked campsites on the route. Here are a couple links about the trail. www.algonquinpark.on.ca/visit/camping/highland-backpacking-trail.php www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=383439 and some photos attached. I don't know if I am missing anything, please let me know if I am. I will post a full report post trip. Brad Mailloux

Thanks Eric. I am sure if you make it there anytime to run the trail you will make what I do look slow.

Ran the Highlands trail on the 22nd. We had a bit of a late start but the weather was beautiful and the colours had turned on the trees. We finished in 5 hours 23 minutes and 49 seconds. To be honest I had hoped on being faster but we stopped a fair bit in the last 10km, Kevin was feeling pretty rough and was struggling on most of the uphills. I don't think I gave the trail enough respect, there was a total of 925 meters of climbing according to Kevin's GPS. No excuses, I should have trained harder. We had a great time and I would love to go back and see how much faster I could go.

I ran the Highlands trail yesterday in a time of 3hrs 29min 25sec. It measured 34.97km on my gps. I ran it counterclockwise in the "recommended" direction. It was a super fun trail and the last 15km were fairly technical and hilly! I will post a link to the gps file once I get home after the weekend.

Nice job Eric! I new you would fly on that trail. I hope to go back this fall and do it again but my training partner is injured. Did you do it solo?

Such an epic trail. I had the pleasure of running it as a training run for a bruce trail FNT attempt. Just over 3hrs is a wild time. Great Job.

Thanks! It is a very cool trail indeed. I ran it as a solo mission. I now want to go back and hike it over a day and enjoy the trail rather then suffer... LOL

Hi,
Awesome runs! After doing a bit of hiking with my son in Algonquin, I came up with the exact same plan of doing this 35km loop as a trail run. I didn't bring any trail running shoes to Canada though, is the trail doable in road running shoes? As I'm not familiar with this trail, any suggestions on what to wear or to take are welcome, I was thinking 2 bottles of water, some calories, Off! and a noise maker for when a bear crosses my path.
Thanks!
Will

Hi all, We just ran the Highland Trail on Aug-22-2015. What a great trail. We did it in 5h30 min. GPS log: connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/874838040Interestingly though, our GPS log tracked 688 meters of elevation gain which is far less than Eric Batty's GPS log with 1275 meters if I recall well. We have 2 possible explanations for this, we use the Garmin 110 watch which is the cheapest Garmin watch and quite possibly does not track as accurately... OR Eric Batty waves his arms up and down non stop when running. I would recommend 2 things for this trail: 1-good trail running shoes; 2-a cold beer waiting for you in your car trunk to celebrate your achievement! Trevor

I ran the Highland Trail on October 9, 2015 in a time of 4h19mins. 1202 meters of elevation gain/loss. Strava: www.strava.com/activities/411797322It had rained hard the night before and many of the rocky sections were pretty challenging. Overall, a beautiful and technical trail which made for a great rip. A few of us are hoping to go again this year and see about getting closer to Mr. Batty's time.

I debated posting this but decided to anyway so here goes nothing . . . I ran ...cough walk cough... the Highland trail in a time of 7:47 minutes. I could tell you it was because of my lack of consistent trail training or respect for the highland trail or because of the ankle deep mud or 2 moose I almost ran into. I could also say it was because near the end I decided to help a mother, her 5 yo son & 2 bikes find their way back to Mew Lake but really that was after 6 hours & 3ish km to go and no chance of making a FKT on this course. So instead I'm posting the SKT (Slowest Known Time) cause I tried and attempted this course and finished (cause that beats DNF which beats DNS which beats DNA) but promise that I will be back again another day...some day...to try again. P.S. Respect to all those who completed this course. You all deserve a medal! Check out my running activity on Garmin Connect. #beatyesterday connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1928986397?share_unique_id=13
