The Neuse River Trail, as described on Wikipedia:
"The Neuse River Trail is a 33-mile (53 km) long paved greenway located in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina, running along the banks of the Neuse River from Falls Lake Dam to the town of Clayton. The route passes through the jurisdictions of Raleigh, Wake Forest, Knightdale, and Clayton in Wake and Johnston counties. The Neuse River Greenway trail is part of the Capital Area Greenway system as well as the Mountains-to-Sea Trail that crosses North Carolina from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks. Open to both cyclists and pedestrians, the Neuse River Trail is the longest greenway trail in North Carolina and the longest paved trail between northern Virginia and western Georgia."
I no longer live in Raleigh, but I grew up there and was partially raised by the waters of the Neuse River Basin. It was in these streams that I learned to fish and canoe, and along their banks that I began my running career by following networks of singletrack and greenway. On Tuesday December 26th, 2017, I had the pleasure of communing with the Neuse itself for 33 miles along this recently finished path, a ribbon of pavement that runs unobstructed from the Falls Lake Dam to N. O'Neill Street in Clayton. I went southbound (downstream) in a total time of 4:46:54. I ran in an unsupported style, carrying bars, biscotti, chocolate-covered espresso beans, and 700ml of water. All on-trail water fountains were shut down for winter so I carried everything from start to finish with no refill. I am unaware of any other thru-runs of this path, other than by the few folks who have thru-run the MST (who were undoubtedly moving slower). Enjoy this suburban Capitol Area gem and post about your experiences!
