The "Stubaier Hoehenweg" is a high-alpine Route that goes through the Stubai Alps in Tirol near Innsbruck, close to the Italian Border. Its a Mix of high alpine trail, some scrambling parts and a few minor glacier crossings. We expect to cross some old snow fields on the north sides aswell. The Route seems to be about 73 km with 6000m of elevation gain and about the same in loss. Usually its done backpacking style from hut to hut in between 5 and 8 days by hikers. There are 7 huts from the austrian alpine club along the way. There also used to be a 4 person Relay-Race in the 80s and 90s which only happend 4 times but the fastest time in the race seems to be under 9 Hours which is crazy fast considering the alpine terrain.
My friend Benjamin and me will start an attempt on the route the coming saturday, 09.07.2016 starting at 4AM in Neustift. We will carry all our stuff and will only pickup water along the way. The weather seems to be great but If if we get into some kind of severe thunderstorm (which are likely to happen in early summer in the alps) we will likely stay in some hut until its over. I will provider a detailed report in english and my GPS track from a Ambit 3 some time next week.
Christian Gleirscher seems to have done the whole Route in 17h and 57minutes on 07.08.2009. His Splits and the Report (in german, but there are Pictures too) can be found here.
Lukas Ruetz and Richard Obendorfer completed the route on 30.08.2015 in 21h and 39minutes. Their report (plus some great pictures from the route and GPS files) can be found here.
For great pictures check out the report from Lukas Ruetz above!
