I'm going to try a north-to-south SCAR this Saturday, April 30. If the women's FKT is really 18:50 then it's highly unlikely I'll be under that, but just in case, I thought I'd better post in advance... I also think it would be nice to have a definite, firsthand reported time for women on this route.
I'm starting around 4am at Davenport Gap and will get a GPS track of my run.

I am planning a solo unsupported SCAR attempt Thursday May 19 starting at 4am at Davenport Gap....going north to south due to logistics with drop off & pick up. Time...we'll see! I'll report back with gps data post adventure:)

On Friday I'm going to try and break Billy's FKT for the SCAR Double. Since Billy went solo and unsupported, I will be doing the same. The weather looks awful this weekend... should be a blast ;-) You can follow me live on my SPOT tracker at bit.ly/1RNx4SX or via updates on my webpage seejoshrun.com

Forgot to post this back in October but I did a birthday SCAR (Fontana to Davenport) on October 22, 2016 and completed it in 22hrs24mins. Such a stellar route. Can't thank my buddies enough for running the second half (overnight) with me. Did a short write up of my experience (link below) for anyone that wants to read. fictionrunning.blogspot.com/2016/10/scarred-at-31.html

I'm planning on an attempt sometime this year. I just need some of the finer points: Where is the precise starting location? I know everyone says "Fontana Dam". But does that mean you've already crossed the dam? Or are you still on the Visitor Center side of the dam? Why end at Davenport Gap? Logically it makes sense to end at Waterville trailhead. Is this because it is the exit point of GSMNP? Thank you!

Tomorrow morning, three members of the SCAR Facebook group will be heading off from Fontana on their SCAR attempt. David Pharr, Joshua Cole and Nick Horvath will be leaving the Dam sometime after 9am. I'll be crewing. Satellite tracking will be live after about 8am at the link provided in the FB group (link below). Having never seen a satellite track through the route, I'll be interested to see how the coverage works out. The unit is set up to report every 2 minutes, but I'm sure there will be significant holes. There's a button where you can send them messages of encouragement. Good luck guys. Relentless Forward Progress. Sub 24. Get it. www.facebook.com/groups/1672230359703142/

Gavin, as far as I'm aware the SCAR is officially border to border of the National Park. This would mean the official start is on the far side of the Dam from the visitor's center and it ends at Mt. Sterling Road on the North end. Of course if you are going for FKT, the course would be the one used by the record holder.

Three of us from a Chattanooga completed SCAR this weekend. Left Fontana headed towards Davenport at 9:20am 5/19/17: Nick Horvath 22:14 Josh Cole 22:45 David Pharr 23:26 Graciously crewed by John Borton who will be making his first attempt in the near future. Hats off to anyone who's completed this incredible route, especially you sub 20hour guys/gals.
Info and pics posted in the SCAR Facebook group. Cheers! -Nick

I wasn't sure about the exact spot on the Fontana side either, but I used the national park sign on the far side of the dam from the visitor center (it was my finishing location, not my start). I agree with JB that the "border to border of the national park" logic makes sense. Even if, at the time, I desperately wanted the finish to be at the end of the trail on the Fontana end:)

Starting tomorrow at 6am. Staying at Fontana Inn tonight, heading north. Been wanting to do this for several years, and pretty excited. Bringing along two Garmin units to track progress. Regardless of time, just really looking forward to a long run in the mountains.

Here's my SCAR run update...
I started at 6am sharp with great weather, a little warm, but good.
I cruised through the unrelenting hills, wore two separate Garmin units, a 905 and a 920.
Upon reaching newfound gap,I learned my gracious crew person was having car problems. The turbo had blown or something on her new Ford escape... She's always kind enough to crew me on these adventures and had tried to uber to Davenport... I told her that's ridiculous. We got into town easily from Newfound Gap.
I'm now heading to Alcoa to get a rental car... A far cry from where I want to be, plodding my way into Davenport gap, alas such is life. A good day in the mountains...albeit disappointing that after many years of wanting to finally run this stretch I was thwarted by logistics.
I was happy with water treatment options, etc.
That is a seriously mountainous first 42 miles.
I started on the south side of the Dam...
