Hello All. I have a question about "unsupported" fkt. I understand by definition you are not receiving any help along the way. My questioning and is about maildrops. In a speed attempt on the pct can you pick up packages and still be considered unsupported? And does that change if you are attempting a fkt for an individual state on the pct? I have read through a lot of threads and I'm still unclear on that. It seems like the issue gets a little muddled when it comes to thru-trails. I understand the no cars(hitching to towns to resupply),but what about the water caches, trail magic etc?

Clearly as we define unsupported it is impractical for a very long trail such as the PCT. There is no "unsupported" FKT for the PCT, AT, etc. Thru-hikers on these trails have established the ethic/style. For example, on the PCT the standard has become that you walk to/from all resupply points. Mail drops are allowed. Technically this is "self-supported" by our definition. You would use water caches that are available to all hikers, but not caches of food or water that you set for yourself. Trail magic is a very gray area and I would suggest not using it for an FKT effort in pure style.
