On 22 Feb 1993 Robert Rankin has claimed he ran the Western Arthur Range Circuit (Tas) 11 hours 20 minutes (Junction Creek, Moraine A, Moraine K and back to Junction Creek) Unverified www.rankin.com.au/essay2.htm

On 21st March 2015 Stu Gibson completed a speed traverse of the Western Arthurs range in 10hrs 43mins. This attempt was solo and unsupported. It was also independently verified using a live spot tracker GPS during the run.

I had a note from guidebook author John Chapman about this route. He indicates that the above trips go only as far as Moraine K, "which is only about 2/3 along the range." Chapman feels that the full traverse should be all the way to Lake Rosanne, so the times quoted above are for a partial traverse. I am unfamiliar with the area, but thought I should post this for future record seekers to consider.

Hi All, Just taking this opportunity to announce my intentions of completing a full traverse of the eastern and western arthurs ranges on 4th Feb. Traverse will begin at Farmhouse Creek, ascend Federation Peak and follow Eastern Arthurs Range to Pass Creek where I intend to leave the track across Lucifer Ridge wherein I will meet with the Western Arthurs Range at Lake Rosanne. I will then continue along the ranges and descend via Alpha Moraine, through Junction Creek and ending with the McKays Track to Scotts Peak Dam. This will be solo and unsupported, expected completion 40hrs.

For the record and to provide some context, I contacted Mr Chapman prior to my traverse and am fully aware of his opinion on the 'full traverse' from a walkers point of view. The Moraine A to Moraine K section contains all the main technical difficulties on the range and is now considered the 'modern traverse' as noted publications such as Australian Geographic Mag. The benchmark was Peter Rankin's speed traverse back in 1993 which is fully detailed in his book Beyond the Horizon. Since 1993 there has been a number (+15) of speed traverses, all following that route that Peter Rankin completed in 1993. Lets not confuse the issue for 'future record seekers' as speed traverse route & benchmark across this range has been firmly established over the past 23 years.

Thanks for the message Stu, Plan has been postponed due to significant fires on the west coast of Tasmania. This has the potential to spread further south so Tasmania Fire Service has Closed access to Scotts Peak Dam..and my exit point After a quick reconnaissance walk yesterday I noticed there was someone else registered at farmhouse creek currently on the Eastern Arthurs, I mentioned this to those on the road closures to Scotts Peak Dam. Strangely enough, after discussing it with the guys at fire command, it appears that the parks and wildlife managers are happy for people to be on the Arthurs Ranges...just not use the Scotts Peak entry. Seems counter-intuitive. Anyway, the range will be there for much longer, so I will aim to do the traverse in the next few weeks. No chance I will be getting close to your times though! Am planing to use the tracking function on my Suunto.

Hi, Sorry to hear your trip has been postponed... yeah I have seen the Tas police have closed the Scott's Peak road and is only open to essential services until further notice. I ran that same route your are planning on 11th Jan 2015 using a live spot tracker, let me know if you have any Q's or need any info?
