Anyone know about and FKT on Mt. Chocorua? My best time up the Piper Trail last year was 51:54 to the summit. The trailhead is located right off NH Route 16 in Albany, NH. I went back yesterday hoping to go sub 50 minutes and went 48:25 to the summit for a new personal record on the route. Curious to know how this stacks up against other times on Chocura (whether on the Piper trail or others). I was only going for ascent time, but my total time back the parking lot was 1:28:30. I don't have GPS to prove but would never embellish anything. I'm more curious to know how this stacks up if anyone has tried the route before.

I'll submit this for reference: I've run it once on May 3, my first time on Chocorua, at a moderate/hard pace via the Piper Trail. There was still some snow and ice on the trail for the half mile before treeline and I stopped for a handful of pictures. I also stopped my watch while hanging out on the summit. 58:00-ish up 1:37:32 run time 1:40:41 total (including summit time). GPS track: connect.garmin.com/activity/308801815It was a very nice weekday spring evening and I had the place to myself. Here's a couple photos:

Hi, my name's Peter Howe,
Just wanted to let you all know I'm headed to Chocorua today, Monday August 4th 2014, and going to see how fast I can get up and down the mountain. I'm borrowing somebody's gps watch for the adventure, and its a quite basic garmin, but hopefully it'll do the job, I'll do what I can to post the data afterwards. Chocorua is one of my favorite mountains, I've good solid weather, and I can't wait get out on the trail! I'll be ascending and descending on the Piper Trail.

This afternoon, I ran up the Piper trail to the summit of Chocorua in 47:42, and was originally going to establish an ascent/descent record, but it started raining on my way up, making the rock faces near the summit a bit too slippery and sketchy for me to give the descent a fast run. Instead I decided just to push for the ascent record, then hang out at the top for half an hour and wait for some friends to catch up at the summit. I then headed down at a comfortable pace and descended the Piper Trail in 37:12. My gps data is attached, although as usual, the gps satellites didn't account for the full distance of 4.5, but the elevation gain is pretty darn accurate. ascent: connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/557360903descent: connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/557360914In terms of the run, it was a great run, I forgot how gradual the first 2 miles of the trail are. I was definitely working pretty hard the whole way up, as my legs were still tired from a big effort on Washington last Thursday, where I summited Washington via the Tuckerman Ravine Trail in 69:28. I'd say there's definitely plenty that could be knocked off this Chocorua time in the future with a set of fresher legs, and being able to work the upper sections faster, and know the trail better. It was only my second time up Chocorua today, but its certainly one of my favorite mountains I've ever climbed. As I was running up, I happened to pass a woman who was running down, and further up the trail, some hikers reported that she had summited in 55 minutes! At that point I wasn't even sure if I could get up that fast! Needless to say, she flew up that mountain, no idea who she was though.

I don't have a GPS watch to prove it because I'm a broke college kid, so I guess take it for what it's worth, but I did Chocura round trip in 1hr 16 min, from parking lot to summit-to parking lot, This past weekend. It was a beautiful day with great temperatures.

What about from the Champney falls side? A friend and I did the ascent in 58:51 on this past Saturday, well off the Strava fastest time of 44:34. I'm surprised how few people are running from that side. Something like 22 on Strava.

Did the Chocura Ascent this weekend in 43:26. I checked the Strava and FKT page and I think this is a new Chocorua FKT. Here is my watch info for proof: www.movescount.com/moves/move127608308Conditions were pretty good, the river at the beginning was totally dried, and much of the path was dry as well. Definitely ideal conditions.

Is up and down the Piper the best up and down trail for Chocura or can you make a loop with the southern trails?
