Sanitarado: Mike Priddy & Peter Bakwin set the FKT of 5h49m (TH-to-TH) on May 30, 2011
Eldoitas: Peter Bakwin set the FKT of 4h59m42s (TH-to-TH) on June 4, 2011
Sanitarado is the name given to a route that lies primarily in the City of Boulder (CO) Open Space & Mountain Parks (OSMP), but also partially in Eldorado Canyon State Park. The route connects the summits of Mt Sanitas, Flagstaf Mtn, Green Mtn, Bear Peak, South Boulder Peak and Eldorado Mtn. It is about 19 miles long, and involves 8500 vertical feet of ascending (and descending). Most of the route is on trails, but the final roughly 1500 vertical feet on Eldorado Mtn are off-trail (and in an OSMP Habitat Conservation Area, which requires an off-trail permit for legal travel, see this page for more information.)
The Sanitarado (and the reverse route, known as "Eldoitas") has been done for by locals for decades, but few times have been recorded for posterity. Bill Wright's trail running records site for the Boulder area lists himself and Mark Oveson as holding the FKT for Sanitarado at 7h49m (TH-to-TH), and Kreighton Beiger as holding the Eldoitas record at 6h56m37s.
On May 30, 2011, Mike Priddy & Peter Bakwin did the Sanitarado in 5h49m, starting at the Mt Sanitas TH / picnic shelter and finishing at the Fowler / Rattlesnake Gulch TH in Eldorado Canyon. They recorded the following (approximate) splits:
They also ran back to their starting point, closing the loop in 7h35m (28 miles, 10,300' gain). The return route included running back from Chautauqua to Sanitas on city streets.
Here is a profile of the entire run. The first 19 miles or so are the TH-to-TH Sanitarado (ending at Fowler TH).
Five days later, on 4 June 2011, Bakwin did the Eldoitas route TH-to-TH in a time of 4h59m42s. He started at the Fowler TH in Eldorado Canyon, and finished at Linden Ave instead of the Mt Sanitas TH. His splits are:
Bakwin's report follows:
Buzz kindly dropped me at the trailhead. I got started a bit after 7AM. Having just done this a few days ago I was able to use a more efficient route up Eldorado Mtn - I just ran up Rattlesnake Gulch all the way to the RR tracks, and then 'shwacked west to the north ridge. This goes well. I got back to the Fowler TH in 1h30m. Things went well from there. Oddly, I was on Bear in exactly the same time as Priddy & I did in the other direction! When I got to Green I thought sub-5 hours might be possible, but it seemed I needed to find a minute or two somewhere. Anyway, I made the effort and did manage to get to Linden just seconds under 5 hours. I decided to go to Linden this time because it felt more like a "traverse" than running back down the south ridge of Sanitas, but it takes very close to the same time either route. This day was definitely a concerted effort for me.
Finally, on 10 June 2011 Bakwin did a (first ever?) "Sanitarado & Back", starting at Linden Ave. and running the Sanitarado, and then back the same way, for a total of about 34 miles with 14,500 feet of elevation gain. Total time was 10h15m09s. Buzz Burrell ran with Bakwin for about the first 7.5 hours (including the full Sanitarado plus up Shadow Canyon), and Maria Petzold joined them for about 4 hours (to Eldorado Springs). The splits are:
