Peter, Thanks for the clarification as to your intent with the definitions. Nitpicking these sort of fine details is exactly the sort of thing that my ultrarunner's mind loves dorking out on. Sorry if I stirred up unwarranted drama.

Wow that was lots of fun. Right now I'm beat and have some pains I'm sorting so I will post a write up with details and some points of verification in the next couple days. However as a quick FYI I started at White River campground at 9:07am on 9.14.12 went clockwise and came back to White River at 1:57 pm on 9.15.12.
I believe that makes my time 28:50. Unfortunately my brother got injured during the run and could not finish.

For the record, my brother John and I did not exchange anything during the run unless me smelling his gas the entire time counts. He is tough as nails and could easily have broken 24 hours if it wasn't for my injury on the trail. Whether we were together or I was in a different country we still draw strength from each other. There is one thing that his FKT has that most unsupported records do not and that is a first hand witness. His time on the wonderland trail is a true FKT.

Huge congratulations, John! You didn't just go sub-30, you crushed it! That is a fantastic time for the WT unsupported.
I look forward to reading your report, but until then, rest and eat!
Well done.

Congratulations, John! I must admit, I expected this kinda time from you. You have been absolutely tearing it up this year. Very nicely done.
David, sorry to hear about your injury. Hope it's not anything that will keep you off the trails for long.

For the record, my wife and I were hiking the Wonderland Trail on 9/14, and John Reese and his brother passed us on an uphill section about halfway between Martha Falls and the point at which the trail crosses WA 706. Don't know the exact time, but it was after our lunch - which I believe we ate around 1 PM, before Sylvia Falls. So timing was somewhere between 2:30 and 3. We arrived at the White River campground the next day, and encountered John again shortly after he had completed his circuit. We did not see him arrive, but when we saw him it was 2:15 on the 9/15, and it was obvious that he had finished only a few minutes before that time.

So heres the write up from my run on the Wonderland Trail. It can be found at this link: relentlessreeses.blogspot.com/ Its the only post so far so it should be easy to find. Fair warning the write up reads a little rough, a bit like a stream of consciousness piece. Its also a little long. My intent was not to entertain but rather to record an accounting of the events from the run as soon as possible after the run. To that end it contains some spelling and grammar errors, and probably a couple of other errors. I will blame those on the many libations I consumed after the run, combined with the expected post long run mind haze. Comments and questions are welcome. I will also post some pictures, and the GPS track I have on that website. My GPS apparently took a dive 19 hours in so it only recorded part of the run. Hopefully all of this with third party verification of my brother and the Groves should be sufficient. As to my time, I think its actually pretty soft. As David said I think that I could (or someone else could) run the course unsupported under 24 hours. However it was my first time on the trail, and I really just wanted to take it in with my bro while simultaneously giving the unsupported record a shot. That said, I dont run for ego, I run for fun. So in any case whether I got the record or not (for whatever reason), the run would definitely had not been for nothing. What a blast! ;D

On Friday, Sept. 14, Darla Askew and I ran the Wonderland Trail. Starting at Longmire at 7:30am and going clockwise. Our finishing time was 31:36, I think that would be a womens FKT? Great trail can't wait to do it again.

Candice Burt here. Alright, I'm back and I survived! Brief info: I finished the complete Wonderland trail beginning/finishing at Longmire and running clockwise. Began 9/19/12 and finished 9/20/12. I ran unsupported and solo, carrying all my own food and gear. Total time was 31 hr 11min and 57sec despite losing the trail on the Glacier section (found it) and running into 2 bears, 2 mountain lions, and 3 porcupines! As well as struggling in the last 6 hours to stay awake. I recorded the entire run on 2 Garmin 910xt GPS watches and a SPOT device. I am working on a blog entry that will include links to all the data collected. You'll be able to find it at www.wilddefined.com Whew, that was a lot tougher than expected! I logged over 25,000 feet of climbing despite my Garmin watches losing reception for 3-5 miles (over the course of the whole run). So I'm guessing the elevation gain was closer to 26,000-27,000 feet. Sort of crazy that two women thought of running the course in the same week!? I had no idea that Darla had run the course the weekend before and was not aware of her finishing time either. Pretty crazy!

Lesson not learned: I'll be trying for the (new) FKT again starting tomorrow AM at Longmire, running clockwise. Though my primary goal is to finish.

Redemption: finished (!) the Wonderland trail solo and unsupported in 27:19:19, running clockwise from Longmire. I started at 6:30 AM on Thursday 27 September and finished at 9:49 AM this morning, Friday 28 September. Perfect weather, brilliant moonlight made things easier than my last go at it. A report can be found here: beyondtheranges.wordpress.com/2012/10/01/wonderland-trail-fkt-927-928/Edit: Whether through user error or a faulty device, no SPOT data logged. I have emailed a couple folks I ran into to see if they'll back me up, but hopefully the report and photos can stand. Splits: Indian Henry's - 1:42 South Puyallup - 3:00 Klapatche - 4:13 Golden Lakes - 6:04 Mowich - 8:35 Carbon Glacier - 11:02 Mystic Camp - 12:40 Granite Creek - 13:58 Sunrise Camp - 15:30 White River - 16:32 Summerland - 19:17 Indian Bar - 21:35 Box Canyon - 24:12 Reflection Lakes - 26:12 Longmire 27:19 Ethan Linck, Portland OR
