I was led to the FKT by search engines about my previous Florida Hike. I attempted to yo-yo the state, but due to the amount of road walking, I decided well into the hike to stop at the completion of one way. All facts of my hike were recorded before and after the hike. I hiked the entire state in 35 days 22 hours, and the Florida Trail in 30 days and 3 hours. I was in constant contact with Adam Bradley, and he wrote a bit about the hike. I started in Key West, hiked to the southern terminus, took the western route around Lake Okachobee, and the eastern route around Orlando. I completed the hike at Fort Pickens, Pensacola, the western terminus. The total miles of the hike is just shy of 1300 miles according to maps and guide books, but I believe it is a bit more due to road maps and gps readings. The FTA and forest service is doing some big changes to the trail this year, and my record will most likely be obsolete due to a much shorter route. But if anyone is interested in attempting on breaking it, I would be glad to help out as much as possible. It was done unsupported, and without missing a single step. All information can be found @ joekisner.blogspot.com, and all questions can be asked @ jkhikes@gmail.com. Kisner's Florida Trail info is here. (comment added by admin)

Howdy!
So I know there was a guy who tried a yoyo of the Florida trail a couple years ago, but can't find anything else on an official Florida Trail FKT, even for sections. Anyone know of an official FKT or one that is recognized as the current FKT? If not, I plan to get it started by setting an initial "soft" FKT of the Ocala National Forest Sections, as well as a yoyo of the Osceola NF section (only 40 miles out and back and an hour from my house, so not hard).

Tomorrow morning, December 10th I'm beginning a southbound attempt of the FT self supported FKT. I've contacted Joe, and I think he may update here for me. If not, I'll be writing reports on my blog daily at jupiterhikes.wordpress.Com as well as photos on my facebook, also "Jupiter Hikes" and instagram jupiterhikesI'll post as many videos as I can, but if I find it to drain to much power I'll still film, and release them after the fact. There will be no outside assistance or pre planned magic. All my resupply boxes have already been mailed. And there will be no use of any vehicle support. I don't have a spot, and I see that's a new rule. However Joe seems ok with how im going at it. I'll keep the gps on my phone on, so later I can make a map from the photos I've taken along the way if there is any doubt. Regardless I'll do the best I can to document this hike completely. I've been hiking the Eastern Continental Trail sobo from Quebec, and although I've been away from my home for the last 5 months walking, this record attempt was planned long in advance. Fun starts in the morning Jupiter

I started Dec 10th at 10:23am, finished Jan 7th at 8:22pm with a new FKT of 28d 9h 59m Much respect goes out to Joe Kisner who came before me, and has been very kind whenever I messaged him. I summarized my hike in this blog post jupiterhikes.wordpress.com/2017/01/11/florida-trail-fkt-summary/Along the way taking 540photos, 200videos, and running into many(so many it was slowing me down!) who can verify where I was through photo, or just seeing me here or there. In that blog post I've included a large chunk of the photos I took which have been uploaded to albums online, as well as my daily splits. As for the videos I haven't decided what to do with them, but if my hike comes into question, I will happily upload, as for now, most are just an (at times embarassing) reminder of the long days over the last month. It's been fun, and as much as I would have said no, a week ago... I'd do it again Jupiter (James Hoher)

In the upcoming weeks, I will be attempting to best Jupiter's time on the Florida Trail. I will be travelling solo, self-supported, and without the assistance of any vehicles. I will document the trip with a SPOT receiver and provide access to its transmissions to disinterested third-parties. If the attempt is successful, I will provide a compete memorial of the adventure upon its completion.
I have contacted Jupiter and Joe K. to inform them of my intentions. They have both been very encouraging. The scope of this trip really humbles me. But these guys' attitudes make me very glad I'm trying to join their ranks.

I have NOT set any Record. Comment: "Tatu" Joe Kisner's record seems to be 29 days 3 hours, not 30, based upon his own bog (link in previous post) and assuming he added an hour due to the change from EST to CST. I was planning an official attempt at the FKT when by pure chance I ran into Phil "Concrete" Phelan on a practice hike at Big Cypress. When I learned he completed the trail in 26 days 10 hours I knew, having trained since August, I had no chance at 26 days. I also had not known, until then, the "Jupiter" James Hoher completed the trail in 28 days 10 hours the week before Phil's hike.
I did complete the FL Trail UNOFFICIALLY, since I felt I had no chance at Phil's new official FKT, from February 15, 07:00 EST to March 15, 14:58 CDT, which is 28 days, 7 hours, 58 minutes. I did have 3 pre hike drops, 2 mail drops and on 3 occasions had rides to and from points on the trail, so my hike was nearly, but NOT unsupported. My unofficial time seems to be currently the second fastest and the fastest for anyone over the age of 55 (being 57), if there is such a category (joke, which there is not). I had unusually dry trail conditions, excellent health throughout, and essentially no delays ever. I picked up a full day gradually over my planned 29.3 days by being able to cover more miles on "road days" than I anticipated.
Congratulations to Phil "Concrete" Phelan for the FL Trail FKT. Congratulations to "Jupiterhikes" for also officially setting an official FL Trail FKT earlier this year while on a more impressive Quebec to Key West hike, and congratulations to "Tatu" Joe Kisner for setting the standard these past years.

On the morning of February 2nd I (Daniel Munsell) will begin a northbound attempt of the Florida Trail end to end self supported speed record. I will be totally human powered for the duration of the attempt never riding in a vehicle as per the self supported stanards. Nor will I have any planned help of any kind. I will carry a SPOT tracking device which can be viewed via a link to my Instagram account dan_munsell. I will post to that account periodically throughout the hike and will document each days events and milage with photos video and journal. In the event of success I will write up a post trip report. Much respect to those that have gone before me (Joe Kisner, Jupiter, Phil Phelan) Looking forward to chasing your records!

On the evening of Feb 26, 2018 I established a new FKT for the FNST. Covering the 1103.7 miles of trail northbound in a time of 24 days 11 hours 45 minutes. I began from the Big Cypress Oasis Visitor Center on Feb 2 at 7:00am EST and arrived at Fort Pickens on Feb 26 at 5:45pm CST. I've added one hour to my overall time in order to account for the time zone change.
Along the way I walked to and from my resupply points never riding in a vehicle and followed the official orange-blazed route the entire way. Taking no road detours. This added an additional challenge to the hike having to deal with barriers and on one occasion navigated a very overgrown tidal creek floodplain with deep sucking mud and sharp grasses and thorns where a boardwalk had been destroyed some time before.
In the coming days I will be writing up a more detailed trip report and will include the link here for all those interested. This was an amazing often humbling experience. I now have even more respect for the efforts of those that came before me and wish the best of luck to the guy or gal that follows!
Happy trails, Daniel Munsell aka Chopsticks
