Thanks for your willingness to contribute! I don't know what to say about that error message - this is a proboards thing. I just tried and got the same message. Rats. Yes, SPOT seems to have troubles with vegetation cover. On a trail like the AT I'd probably go with DeLorme. I use the SPOT quite a bit out west (CO, UT, AZ) where we don't have a lot of trees and it seems to work usually quite well. In general it seems like DeLorme is the better, more reliable system, but SPOT is cheaper. A solo hiker may not want to post their tracker link publicly for safety reasons. You should at least give the link to 1 or 2 objective, reliable people who can watch the track and vouch for what they see there. Also, you should be sure to download the track points before they get deleted from the host server. I think SPOT saves points for about a week, but I don't know about DeLorme. That means on a longer trip you'll need someone with access to your SPOT account who can download the points for you. Do you know which specific DeLorme tracker most people are using? This is going to sound like a stupid question, but from the photos of them online, they look like giant old-fashioned cell phones, so how are people attaching them to their packs, and are they not fairly annoying??

What if someone is accompanying you to film. Could be considered a pacer as well

Looks like I may attempt a first-"unsupported" double crossing of the Arrowhead 135 this next week. I know the course has been doubled twice for sure, and this next week may see 4 more of us attempt (but, I believe all have been supported). My category is "unsupported" for the race, and i plan to attempt to go back "unsupported". I am not very tech savvy, nor do I know much about this FKT stuff. I will have a spot tracker on fastertracks, and probably track leaders. I did read some info concerning what "unsupported" means to different folks. I plan on carrying all my food and supplies from the start, melt snow along the way, but i will be walking/racing with others during the race (first 135) and possibly returning with another individual. So, how that falls into a "unsupported category" I really am not too sure. I understand that getting this done along with $1.75 will get me a cup of coffee at any convenience store, but I really am attempting to build a resume for longer winter events such as the Yukon or ITI. Thanks! I will read any advice given to me. Thanks The Rambler

Wondering about attempting FKTs in a different season than when the previous FKT was set. For example, if someone set an FKT in the summer and I wanted to try and beat this but in the winter, does this count or would it be in a whole other category for that specific route.

Winter could be another category, or not, depending on the route and climate. For example, the NH Hut-to-Hut is considered a different animal from summer. Or climbing all the Colo 14ers in winter - very different challenge from summer! OTOH, I’m sure there are many routes that aren’t very different in winter, or at least you can find times when they’re not that different. For those season doesn’t matter. Note that winter means calendar winter: Dec 21 - Mar 21 (northern hemisphere).
