The Capital Ring is a 78 mile (126km) path around London, linking up parks and green places. It officially starts at Woolwich Foot Tunnel but the circular nature of the path means that it can be started and finished at any place. I have researched an FKT for this path but as yet have been unable to find any record of an attempt. Does anyone know of an FKT on this path?

I would really like to attempt this in late-2017. I imagine doing it in 4x 30km stints with short sleeps in-between. I have friends in Stratford, Balham, Kenton and Harrow so could quite easily manage a run of this length, sleeping for 2-3 hours between efforts. Thoughts?
EDIT: Upon closer inspection it would be entirely do-able (and has been done) in one day - time to get running!

I would very much like to read it.

Found some notes and photos by a guy called Sark Kenny he claims to have done the entire run in 20 hours and 40 minutes (supported). Photo evidence enough? His captions are more of a history of London and less of a run log. - www.adventuresinbetween.com/capital-ring-run-photos?lightbox=imageqaeThoughts? --- I am also speaking to James Ellis, he ran the TCR with a group of friends (over the course of 2 days, with real sleep in the middle) in around 16 hours. But he had pints and burgers, and a fluffy pillow. His run report is here.. - www.justbecauseitsthere.com/2012/05/13/capital-ring-run/I'm getting more and more excited for my run in December - need to train myself on running for more that 3 hours - my current longest time.

Unless you have some reason to doubt the stated time I'd take that as the time to beat. It would be worth getting in touch with him, as is common procedure in chasing FKTs - find out what he did and how.

The 78mile course is basically 3x marathon - he (kinda) did 3 back-to-back 6hr 30mins marathons - which in itself is quite impressive. Not sure whether I'm going to go supported or unsupported yet but either way, 20hrs 40mins is the time to beat. Is there a best practise for pre-attempt protocol? What needs to be done to make it official, aside from running it, proving it, and documenting it?

Unless you have some reason to doubt the stated time I'd take that as the time to beat. It would be worth getting in touch with him, as is common procedure in chasing FKTs - find out what he did and how. I have spoken to Sark Kenny - FKT Holder at 20hrs 40mins, and he has agreed to help me in whatever way he can in the lead up to my run. I have started a research document, which I will try and keep updated as I train and prepare for this attempt, it can be viewed here.. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yvJkGWtbQtrGd2kpIdsGjQU4V71FAqxQ3ABqTENiF74/edit?usp=sharing- I have mapped Kenny's 20hrs 40mins run (at an average speed of 15.08 minutes per mile) so I can track my progress against his during the run.
- I have decided (provisionally) that I will make the run (starting at dawn) on December 31st of 2017, starting in Woolwich, heading clockwise toward Falconwood. Finishing the run in the Woolwich Foot Tunnel later that evening.
- I plan to have a support car meet me at regular intervals to resupply, change socks, eat, etc. and will also be (hopefully) running with a few other people for short stretches of the route - mostly for moral support, but also to try and keep me on pace to break the FKT.
Now, I know I am planning this run VERY far in advance, but in order to give myself the best chance possible at making the record, I want to be as prepared as possible - I have planned a few trail/off-road races for this year and will also try and run as many sections of the route as possible during the summer.
Stay tuned runners, should you want to keep up with my progress you can email me - mickwwarwick@gmail.com, or follow me on Twitter at lifebymick

Have started a blog about my ongoing running adventures with a major slant towards my Capital Ring attempt in December - www.lifebymick.wordpress.com - this is where I will announce my attempt, post updates, and eventually, distribute my proof as I go after Sark Kenny's 20hr 40min FKT for the Capital Ring. Hi Mick How is your training going? If I was you, I would attempt your FKT for the Capital Ring in summer rather than winter. The course is muddy in places when wet, and even if you are lucky with the weather, the overnight temperature in winter will make a winter attempt much harder than in summer. Richard (M25 FKT holder)

I've been thinking of having a go at this self supported for quite a while now. I've regularly run a lot of the northern section of the Ring from my house in Seven Sisters to my in-laws in Harrow, and also the western section near where I have worked. I'm often wildly optimistic about long run times but I reckon it might be doable in about 18hrs - i'd have to start early & finish late that night. I ran the Lakes in Day Ultra (50 mile) last year in 16hrs and that had a LOT of elevation. I've started more targeted recces and covered off all but about 12 miles of the Ring. I'd be starting & finishing on Green Lanes by Finsbury Park, going round the Ring clockwise. I've encountered a few closures - you have to come off around Pudding Mill Lane & the path beyond East Finchley station is closed at night, as are Highgate Woods. I tried a section from South Kenton to my home at night. The parkland walk down from Highgate was fun with a headtorch! I figure if any detours taken due to closures are longer than the actual route, the FKT is still valid... Not sure when I might get chance to try it, depends on work and family but might try it the week of 14th August - otherwise might be next summer. Would be good to try it before the nights draw in! If I do i'll hire a spot tracker and will post a URL to live tracking if I can. Whether I make it round or not i'll try and share my learnings on here. Maybe if I have a good day i'll be able to drop the bar down a bit from 20h 40min... Hope the training is going well Mick

This is a good route to attempt self supported as if you ever chose to abandon, or more likely your body makes that decision, then you are never far from a tube or bus. Plus there's shops and food a plenty on the route.
I've run the entire southern section and then up to the m40. I can't think of any stretches which are currently in accessible.
I agree it makes sense for a summer attempt. Firstly it's just easier with increased daylight and temperatures, and secondly the route passing through a number of parks which will be on shorter opening hours in winter.
I'd love to have a crack in the next month if the legs recover after racing at the weekend. I'd be starting a few hundred metres from home in Crystal Palace.

Not had chance to make an attempt this week. I hired and tried out a Spot tracker though. It gives me chance to recce the couple of bits i've not tried from Grove Park to Crystal Palace and a short section linking Greenford to Horsenden Hill. If i'm able to have a go before the evenings draw in i'll post here. Good luck if you do get to have a go next month Mackfly...

Did any of you guys make an attempt in the end? I've recced almost the whole course now and am thinking of having a go at it in April. What evidence do I need apart from the GPS data?
