Also I just read the post from Guest user "Dr.Dre" and I didnt know you could rent SPOTS, my knowledge about them is all second hand. I was told that the unit gets linked to the person via their website, I suppose that I was incorrectly informed.

Bronson, you've said a couple of times that you used a Garmin for parts of the middle of your hike. First of all, I don't know why you would say it isn't accurate - it should be as good as any recreational GPS. Anyway, I recommend that you provide the data from that, which will help people assess for themselves what you did. Also, as I've said, it's very helpful to write in detail about your experiences, and it's best to do this when your memory is fresh. Finally, you said you tried to find out what was needed for verification. If you go to "Read This First", which is the first thing you see on the main page of this site, there is a detailed discussion of those issues. Thanks! PB (admin)

To clarify I wasnt trying to bash this site, it takes a lot to compile all of this information and its a great resource. I was referring to a post I made in this thread and not trying to say that this forum didnt have lots of helpful information. Also I said the Etrex isnt as accurate, this was comparing it to my watch. It still is accurate enough for what I needed it for. That being said Ive read through everything stated above and by the end of the month Ill have a full day-by-day report posted with photos I took descriptions of people I met and full GPX files. I know that this is a long time to wait but the hiking season is coming to a close and Im trying to squeeze out as much hiking as I can in my free time.

... you used a Garmin for parts of the middle of your hike. First of all, I don't know why you would say it isn't accurate - it should be as good as any recreational GPS. ... The Garmin Etrex, at least for early models, can be quite inaccurate for the points that it ultimately stores. To conserve its very limited memory (1200 points), it averages multiple points and saves those averages. So, while the original points were quite accurate, the averages can be far off track if the path is not very straight. tchester.org/sgm/analysis/gps/etrex_saved_track_accuracy.htmlBut I agree that it would be helpful if Bronson would provide the saved data from the device. Keeping in mind its possible limitations, it will still be informative.

Aborted my NOBO Too many snow storms for FKT type shelter! Next year... Brandon, During your FKT, did you mail supplies to your above listed resupplies? I mailed supplies to Molas Pass Campground, Monarch Souvenir Shop (Western Collegiate Route), and Copper Mtn Resort. All minimized detours from the trail.

Brandon et al, Anyone have a "contact" at Copper Mountain? Operator said they only accept resupply packages for people who are paying guests...
I want to ask the community if unmanned caches are considered appropriate for self-supported thru hiker FKT. The MTB CT racers do not allow this. If I cache a bear container, do people consider this a ethical transgression? I want to do the correct, irreproachable resupply but not having copper mountain changes planning a fair amount. Comments and thoughts?

I've spent the past 10 months reading up on FKTs through this site [ FKT ProBoards] I've also learned a lot about what is expected from the FKT community to meet the burden of proof. I have a few attempts planned this summer starting with the Colorado Trail (unsupported) on July 9th and in order to exceed the burden of proof I will use the following methods of verification: During FKT Run
- SPOT Locator w/ real time tracking
- Garmin Connect Sync using VIVOActive HR watch [Profile Link]
- Real Time Instagram Post (when cell coverage allows) [INST Link]
Post FKT Run- RAW GPX Data
- Trail Notes / Journal
- List of Hikers I met & Emailed Responses
- Post Hike Video
I encourage anyone with the time to come out and say hi or follow my progress online.
Please let me know if anyone has any other notes or ideas that I should include.
HAPPY TRAILS! BRONSON

Howdy Guys, Nice to see Bronson going for it again! Ill be using him as my "rabbit"- as I've been planning on starting my self-supported CT FKT SOBO on July 10th. Waterton to DRO. Of course with his 50 mile headstart, I may never see him!!!!
I will be going for the self-supported record set by Brandon S. last year. Per commonly accepted norms, I will attempt this in thru-hiker style with no support. My resupplies will be in publically accessible places or stores. I will resupply at Princeton Hot Springs and Molas Pass. Unfortunately, the people I talked to at Copper Mt Resort claim they only hold resupplies for CURRENT guests! This is sad as it requires carrying 230 miles of food rather than 120!
I will use my SPOT every moment of movement, only turning it off for sleep. Zahorian did an amazing job of documentation. I will not be providing video but... I will take photo of starting time, position by GPS on CT app in morning and night. If I see hikers, Ill let them know what I'm doing and potentially get their email.
That said, I appreciate the need to provide appropriate and reasonable evidence of an attempt but we are not doing this for the $10 million payout. If I can't break the record honestly, why would I lie to you or myself?!
Id like to offer my SPOT link to be followed in real time by several interested parties on this site. Please PM if you are interested. In particular, I think Bakwin and perhaps JZ or BS if they are interested...
On the off chance, I claim the FKT, I want to provide a small background and palmares to put my possibility of success into reference.
I've been a lifelong endurance athlete. I've been an ultrarunner for 20 years. In the earlier days of ultrarunning, I was age group competitive in OR. Feel free to google my ultrasignup. I took a break from running and did ultracycling races for 2 years (500 milers in one "stage"). I also road raced but I focused primarily on cyclocross where I was regionally successful. I have the dubious honor of being the 2016 inaugural Fat bike masters world champ from the Crested Butte event.
I have been training for this FKT exclusively since last July. I can offer private viewing of preparations on Training peaks at some point, also.
As Bronson mentioned, really this FKT comes down to what I call "ultra math" Unless you have national class exercise physiology, it simply but painfully requires about 15-20 hours of movement per day. It seems the performance ceiling is much less than 4 mph average on this course... It is tough but doable to average 3-3.5 mph daily.
Heres hoping someone has a new FKT by the end of the summer! Cheers! Dre' Chihuahua whisperer

The Colorado Trail is currently closed at Hotel Draw, immediately north of Indian Ridge. There is a lightening strike started fire currently being allowed to burn itself out. Very sad. I am currently searching out more info like a possible date the fire will put itself out in containment zone. The CT will be diverted south and east to Hermosa creek where the CT will terminate at Lower Hermosa TH until CT is reopened at Hotel Draw.
I'm sad about this on all levels. I think that the fire could be out by mid to late July hopefully. They wont allow it to threaten alloutside those tight parameters.

Glad for her!
Current info from above govt website showing "containment July 15"
Peter, would you like my spot link for my FKT? Will decide last minute whether to start July 10th or to delay so fire is more likely to be out... If trail is closed, there will be no "reproducible" FKT due to alternate routing...
