Anyone know if there's a fastest known time for the length of the AT through Shenandoah NP?

My friend and I intend to attempt this in April 2015. If completed we will post something here.

So 23:20 is the time? Has anyone since attempted this?

Does anyone know if there has been a FKT of the Shenandoah section since Matt's report? I didn't see where he mentioned the stopping point. Possums rest overlook? If started at Jarman's Gap, that would be about 95 miles.

He says <6 miles from Compton Gap, so he used the registration at 969.6 for the north (99.3 miles). Maybe Shendandoah was different in 2004, because Jarman is about 8 miles from the southern registration nowadays (107 miles). If you're going to go for it, might as well go box to box and not try to cut corners.
Could also just email him.

I'm really surprised this isn't more of a contested FKT route. So easy to crew, a really famous park, not the worst terrain in the world...

I have this on my "todo" list of things to attempt once it gets a bit cooler out. I'd like to do it unsupported, and I'm going to formalize the route since no one else really has. I've been talking with the rangers at the park, and there are red blazes to indicate park boundaries. I believe it should be a boundary to boundary run, and I'm thinking about going South to North. I'm working on coordinates currently just to make it even more obvious, using the PATC maps as reference as well as discussing with the rangers (they find this project entertaining a least).

Couldn't registration boxes or signs be used?

Here’s a map: www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/upload/south.jpgwe ran from Jarman gap to 522, which is a few miles north of the SNP register near possum’s rest for a total distance of 99+ miles. Crazy to think that was over 13 years ago… good luck

Interesting. While not contiguous, it does cross Skyline a couple times South of Jarman, including being in park boundary at Rockfish. I can get the idea of Jarman, though. But if within the park is the plan, why 522? Sorry if that was explaiend at the one site but it's behind a signup now and I can't remember from when I last read it!

If I recall right (it's getting to be a while ago!): primary target was to traverse SNP in one day. Secondary goal (if time remained): tack on extra distance in 24 hours. Plus it's a bit of backtrack from Possum's rest to Compton anyway, why not exit further north and log those extra miles. I guess one tactic to improve on this would be to go SOBO starting from Possum's rest with Rockfish the target. Could be the first recorded triple-digit day on AT?! Hard to believe that. One minor regret I sort of have is not using the 40 minutes left on the clock to log one extra mile to officially hit 100 (technically due to a wrong turn, distance covered on foot was over 100, but that doesn't count)... But that would've meant two miles roundtrip from TH and I was pretty much toast. Hope you get a chance to give it a shot!

It is curious to see this as such a little-challenged leg of the AT. Long ago, when I was faster and living in NC, I had hoped to one day do this stretch in 24 hours. And then it kind of fell out of my mind for a long while. Now, 15 years later, I'm in the PNW and curious. I think I'd still like to get after it one day. I'm sure the FKT will be a good bit beyond my ability, but I do hope there's some agreement about where the "official" start/finish is.
If it was up to me (it shouldn't be) I'd vote for Rockfish Gap South Station to Front Royal North Station. I could be mistaken, but it looks as if the park boundaries extend along the entire trail corridor from route 64 to 55.
