On Fri, Nov 7, 2014, I (Christof Teuscher) set out for an unsupported attempt of the Joshua Tree traverse. The attempt was announced beforehand: www.teuscher.ch/aagaa/announcement-unsupported-joshua-tree-traverse-attempt. The route is 37.3 mi long with about 3,200ft of elevation gain and 4,300ft of elevation loss. It starts at the Black Rock Campground, traverses the park, and ends at the North Entrance Station. My attempt was completely unsupported, i.e., I carried all my food and water. No crew or caches were used. The reduce my need for water, I ran entirely throughout the night. I started at 7pm on Fri, Nov 7, 2014, and finished in 7:12:50. I believe this is a new unsupported FKT. Photo montage from www.enduranceguy.com

I (Jessica Kelley) completed this route on Oct 26, 2015. Like Christof, I did it unsupported, which included carrying all the water I needed for the traverse. It took me 10:02. As far as I know, I'm the first woman to do this route unsupported. I’m hoping another woman will come along and put in a real effort at an unsupported FKT. If she does, she will almost certainly beat my time by a couple hours. Running alone through the desert at night is a cool experience! Give it a go! Cool, it'll be fun to track all 3 of you! Be sure to high five when you cross paths!

Ha, unreal! We'll probably see you a few miles into our run then. Good luck! You mention concern about the desert heat - I am showing highs in the 60s, perhaps reaching above 70 at the peak at lower elevations such as the North Entrance Station. I was anticipating a very nice cool day, maybe 45-65ish range throughout the run. But I haven't been out there - in your experience should we be worried about heat? Thanks.

Justin and I finished in 6:41:49, today 3/12/2016 starting at 6:23AM, for what appears to be a new unsupported FKT. We each carried all of our own supplies including 4 ~20oz bottles of tailwind, a 2L bladder of water, and a few Gu's. The fluid proved to be more than enough, and was even discarded at mile 30 when we could confidently calculate the remaining need. We crossed paths with Christof at our mile ~33 IIRC for the FKT Proboards meet up We saw his footprints the entire way, and they proved useful in the morning when we were unsure of navigation choices, though these were not too difficult anyway in the daytime and we did have plenty of navigational resources if need be. Justin performed admirably, though I felt considerable general fatigue, as well as soreness in what I think is tibialis anterior, for miles ~19-30. With the downhill after that, a slight adjustment to my gait, and the finish in sight, adrenaline took over and we laid down the last 6-7 miles at 9min/mile average (which felt like 6:30) with one in the 7s. I will likely follow up soon with photos and more details. Strava links below: www.strava.com/activities/515405039www.strava.com/activities/515273635

Congrats Christof! This is the man who said "here come the crazy guys" to Justin and I, haha, and look at what HE has done... I am surprised your watch read >90deg, though not too surprised. It certainly was a bit warmer than I anticipated. I felt a weird combination of cool breezes yet overheating at the same time. The desert just seemed to sap my energy. I don't think I fully realized it until I poured some extra water over my head at mile 30 and felt completely refreshed! Anyway, incredible effort, I am very impressed especially given your statement when we met "I don't know how I will make it back" and very even splits (9 hr out/downhill, 10 hr back/uphill).

Congratulations Lani!! Looks like you went during daylight? How were temps? Would love to read a trip report if/when you get a chance. So thrilled to have another woman attempt and soundly take this one from me!
