Hey Folks,
Making a Mountain Running FKT attempt on Gunung Semeru, East Java, Indonesia start approx 0000 24Aug13.
Will start from the road head, Ranu Pani (2109m) and ascend to the summit (3676m) via the, easy, traditional route, as described everywhere I've been able to find e.g. this: www.gunungbagging.com/semeru/ and following the route provided here: www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1292022.
Estimated time sub-10hrs, Unsupported (starting with all food and water and collecting water along the way as required).
Recording via Suunto Ambit (though the Barometer is F'd on this so it will only display the track) and a Garmin eTrex30.
Distance is 17.8km and +2270m / -704m each way, to bring the approx total to 35.6km and +2974/-2974.
My guides have been instructed to start walking up with my pack and tent at about 0900 so that if I'm struggling i'll meet up with them on the descent and we can camp on the mountain. However, if I do see them and feel fine to continue i'll run right past them back to the start and they've been instructed to turn around and descend behind me. I'm not sure if that contingency plan means this is an Unsupported, Supported or Self-Supported attempt but unless they provide me with aid (e.g. I'm carrying a Sat Phone for the same reason and with the same justification) It seems U.S. from what I can gather.
I've made cursory searches of FKTs but there is no community of speed ascents in Indonesia, from what I can gather.
I've posted this post on the defacto-meeting place for peak ascents in ID, www.gunungbagging.com and through my Blog's page (wildplans) on their facebook page www.facebook.com/GunungBagging.
[EDIT]: Found evidence of running the peak here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlq5BlJVokA and a planned event taking place in Nov2013 - bromotenggersemeru100ultra.com/ . I've posted on the Youtube page and emailed the organiser of the race. The latter is a very bare site so it's difficult to establish the course.
Cheers folks
