Round trip 4 hours and 6 minutes. I am from Kauai, age 21. I run for the University of Colorado, Boulder now. I have ran the trail two times. I ran with a friend but a different person for each time. I ran 4:12 the first time then 4:06 the second time. Both times were in the summer of 2013. Both times we reached the water fall at Kalalau in 2 hours flat then came back slower. The first time we did not bring water or food so it was brutal. We drank out of streams and ate guava. The second time I was prepared and took off 6 minutes. It was by far the hardest run I have ever done! Havnt heard of any faster time! I would like to break 4 hours this summer.

Here is my blog write up on my FKT. iruntorun.me/2014/12/29/kalalau-trail-fkt-an-end-to-an-epic-summer/ It seems Pierce may now have the fastest time from 2013. It is definitely possible to go sub 4hrs with a focused effort. Nice work Pierce! Was the 4:06 including a running clock? I would suggest running your sub 4hr attempt with GPS so that we can see splits! Would be epic to break the 4hr mark.

Blog write up on my FKT run at www.iruntorun.me. Also splits posted to Strava - www.strava.com/activities/223904678Pierce - Awesome work man, sub 4hrs is definitely doable. Running for UC Boulder, there's no doubt in my mind you hit 4:06. Try to take a GPS on your next attempt though, would love to see the splits. I had about 28 junk minutes taking pictures, enjoying the rivers/waterfalls, and talking to people since it was my first time to Kauai and the views were incredible. Cheers brother!

Do you need to get a wilderness pass or register with the rangers to run/hike the entire trail. I was told that if you go past the first main beach (at around the 2 mile point) you need to get a permit. If so where do you get them?

On January 9, 2018, I set a new FKT on the Kalalau Trail, running the route to the waterfall and back in 3:57:45 . Conditions were great and the trail was super fun. www.strava.com/activities/1349365636
