This information from Aaron Sorensen:
The legend of the mile climb.
The mile climb is a myth, a legend, and an impossible feat that even the great Gods of the past have never accomplished.
The true distance of the mile has only been around since 1959 and only 2 other countries use the mile distance as the standard unit of measurement. Then there is the Vertical Kilometer. A very popular climb that many Euro's compete in. The Vertical Kilometer has gained popularity and spread almost as fast as the 100 mile races have expanded in the U.S.
After the recent years of the rapid growth of ultra running in the U.S., there has yet to be a Vertical Mile Climb scheduled. Our beloved unit of measurement has gotten so little love that not a single mortal has ever been able to accomplishe the feat in under 1 hour. I am not counting a treadmill. Although to accomplish this at a 15% grade 1 mile climb on a treadmill, one would have to run at 7mph or 1.75 miles every 15 minutes. This is a distance that only the top 3-5% ultra runners could do.
So why has no one done the mile?
According to science, the vertical mile in one hour should be able to be accomplished much easier than one would expect. In all fairness, I have been searching high and low for a location to put a mile climb on for the past 3 years and was just able to find one. Regardless of this fact, it also happens to be 1 hour from my house.
So here goes the scientific mombo jumbo.
The mile is 2000' longer than the kilometer and 1.6 times longer
The Vert K record is 29:42.
In the running world, the record 1/2 marathon is a faster per mile pace than the 12k record at 33:31 vs 58:23. So being that there should be no pace difference between the Vert K record and Mile, the mile time would equate to about 50 minutes.
Being able to complete the mile in a sub 1 hour time is a 16% time difference between 50 and 60 minutes. Yet it has never been accomplished???
Question is, is any American even 84% as good as the top Euro?
All of this is coming to a point. The point is that there really really needs to be a mile climb. The legend and myth of the mile needs to have it's prophecy fulfilled. Along with a legend to be born, they would rise up above even the Gods to become the first ever to complete the mile climb.
