Carrie is plugging away, but seems to be having some problems. She left Marshall Pass Rd this morning after a 12 hour break. 5 days in and she has, I think, 260ish miles to go, so the record seems out of reach.
Yes, please give me your SPOT link. Good luck!

So much can go wrong out there. Hopefully, she is fine and just needed some extra time to be a human who wasn't moving. Ill send you link tonight. Thank you Peter

More bad news for Colorado. Beatle kill is to be our nemesis for years to come. Breckinridge Fire started. Fire is directly on CT, Miner's creek, west of Gold Hill TH.
That would be day 2-4 of a FKT paced effort...
I will decide at last minute to do. Bronson, what are you thinking?

I think worst case I will have to delay a week. Im concerned about air quality more than anything else, but downed trees would be an inconvenience as well
Are you going east to west Dre?

Are you planning on taking detour around miners. Creek? It won't be a FKT for normal CT. That's why im delaying. Too much work for an asterix. Figured jury would not accept that. Good luck wherever you do!

Taking alt routes is definitely controversial. See the PCT thread for more.

It looks like the reroute is cutting out 6-10 miles but I hope that when I get there it will be open again, there was some rain so I doubt there will be any fire risk.

Just an update: So I popped my ankle on day one and it only got worse. I could see that I wasn't going to get the time I wanted so I pulled the plug and am gonna go again early August

I had planned a through-run of the CT (which, if I stay on my schedule would be a female supported FKT), starting in mid-June and then ended up rescheduling it to start today. At one point, there were issues with fires in three areas (segments 3, 7, and 27), so I rescheduled it again to start a week from today, on 7/19. I am still concerned that segment 7 won't open. I have asked on a few message boards, and I haven't gotten any optimistic responses. I called the Peak 2 fire number and the National Forest Service - Peak 2 people referred me to the FS and said they couldn't even guess when segment 7 would re-open; I can't get through to anyone in the FS. Starting next week likely will be the last chance I have to run the CT this year. Although putting it off until next summer isn't the end of the world, there are some really strong incentives to go this year - the two big ones being that I have a lot of support, and my mom is terminally ill and doesn't have much time left. I really wanted her to see me finish the CT and hopefully with a female (supported) FKT. I have considered taking the time I have from the 19th until the end of month and running the OR Skyline Trail (which is the PCT through OR), but I'd much rather stay local given the support I have here. If segment 7 does not re-open, and I finish on schedule, will the FKT be recognized? The bike path detour is ~12-13 miles, so it distance-wise it is actually almost the same as segment 7 - it just doesn't go up over the pass and down into Copper. Does how close I am to the FKT matter? For example, if I beat it by minutes, one could argue that the bike path (v. the CT on segment 7) made a difference and facilitated the record, while if I beat it by many hours, the 'what if' is still there, but arguably had less impact? I appreciate any insights you have - thank you!

Very sorry about your mom. I wish her & you the best on this journey.
Running the reroute would disqualify you from the FKT. I know it's beyond your control & disappointing, but the CT is what it is.

I'm heading out in 2 days... July 14. A friend said I should consider posting something here beforehand. Planning to go East, with hopes of hiking segment 7... But we'll see. I'm going to be trying something different I will be using strava and video footage to document as I do not have a spot device.

Hey there,
tried to post Tuesday night but didn't work on my cell. I aborted. Read below for reasons and thoughts. Cheers. Good Luck all!
I had a great first day without going deep. 57 miles not including a one mile misadventure (wrong turn at a major campsite). Second day only managed 46 mile to Breckenridge.
104 miles in 2 days. I think I could have physically kept up the pace but a number of things caused me to abort.
1. Mental weakness. I trained exclusively for this FKT for 1 entire year. The mental aspect also developed well. Unfortunately, several weeks before my attempt, I had a mental "setback." I don't say as an excuse but to underline how this type of effort is 90% mental! Run/hiking 55 miles a day is hard but when you are doubting it every few hours, it's tough! Usually, I would have a single low spot a day that is easy to shake but with my current state of mind, it was not manageable, happening very frequently.
2. Fires. Smart people will wait for fires to be out and closures lifted. I had planned my training and peak to be for July 10th start. I did not want to restart training so I could reattempt later this summer. Also, have limited vacation like most. It is very hard to push yourself every minute for a POSSIBLE FKT when there are reroutes. I figured that I would have an asterix by any result. The only way people would accept a new FKT would be if I broke the self-supported by greater than 12 hours due to the 13 mile reroute. Anything less, people would say the 4-5 hours saved and 13 miles shortened were integral in a new record ( I was assuming 412 fire/Highline would be open by the time I got there...
3. CT itself. Wonderful trail. I have done all of it in the past with some segments many times. Although familiarity is a strength, I found that thinking about going through certain segments again brought back PTSD from prior experiences. I was super excited to see the San Juans (despite lots of time there) but was not thrilled to go through La Garita area. I do find it beautiful in its own right and it is a fast section but I had some painful experiences a few weeks back!
In any case, I had a great year training, prepping and dreaming of this. I am a little sad and embarrassed but I made the right decision for me, that day.
Gonna jump on CDT for 100 miles from Pagosa north now that I have recovered mentally. I'm gonna take a real tent and stove. So excited to eat warm food!!
THis is a wonderful goal to have. I don't regret anything. Good luck to all!
