I love reading all of this as I have done two R2Rs and one R2R2R back in the early 80s. Never even thought about competing for time though- although it's interesting that some of the records from that time period stood for quite awhile. Thanks for keeping this tradition going all you youngsters out there!

Tonto FKT still stands. We didn't have the best day out there... very hot first day leading to bouts with heat exhaustion caused us to cut our losses and pull out at Indian Gardens. It didn't help that we probably went a bit to light and, in the end, were almost guaranteed to run out of food if made a push for the finish. Whoops. After having such a rough run of it, I have even more respect than before for Scott and Joe for cranking this thing off without much knowledge of the trail.
I learned a ton from this effort though and will get a report up here at some point soon about what exactly it takes logistically to have a strong chance at a fast time in there for someone willing to have a go at it.
The Tonto doesn't take kindly to unsupported, fast and light efforts, due to heat in the canyon, snow on the rim, tricky road conditions, water availability, ruggedness and trail finding so you have a tiny window to make this thing happen each year... I guess that is why it is such a rad adventure!
So, in the end we did S. Bass to Bright Angel R2R in a little over 24 hours (60 miles) with a lot of walking and breaks after the heat exhaustion finally took us down and a three hour break for napping in the Indian Gardens toilet stalls.

I didn't include any "step by step" directions on how to get a fast time on the Tonto at this time. After further thought, I felt that the Tonto is such a wild and adventurous trail that I didn't want to dumb it down with an online manual on how to do it fast (I didn't finish, so maybe I'm not the one to produce this 'manual' of the Tonto anyway). Of course if anyone is interested in going for it they can always feel free to contact me and I'll give what ever beta I can.

Heads-up!!.. Jason Wolfe, Jared Scott, & Rob Krar will be attempting to break the Grand Canyon Single Crossing (North to South) Record on Friday, May 23rd. Jared Scott is the current record holder at 3hr 6min 10sec.. conditions seem right for lower that time.

New GC North to South Single Crossing record set today!!.. Lots of lead changes and super fast running - Rob Krar won the day in 2hrs 51min 30sec smashing the previous record by nearly 15min.. Jason Wolfe was next in 2hrs 58min 50sec.. Jared Scott (past record holder) ran 3hrs 3min 10sec. Super day by all..

if 2 seconds matters, then I can safely assume the exact one square foot spot on both the north and south rim have been agreed upon and established for all future efforts.

I recently hiked r2r2r with my family. My mom, twin sister, and I did it in 23hrs:37mins and my brother finished in 24:50 with my dad. I am 16, but at 14, would my brother be the youngest person ever to do r2r2r? This site sees a lot of r2r2r-ers, so I hope that at least one person knows. I have tried searching the Internet, but I haven't found anyone that has hiked it at such a young age. Thanks for the help!

Well, I came up short.. 7hrs 36min. Battled +95degree heat most the day, which led to MASSIVE cramping. Highly suggest that anyone doing this run watches the forecast.. if temps are hot, avoid this run. It is almost 24hrs later and I am still cramping.. happy I made it out alive.. seriously.

My husband and I are going to attempt to run sub 8 hours on the R2R2R on November 21st and I hope to be the first woman under 8 hours. We'll be starting from South Kaibab around 7am. -Jason and Clara Santucci
